Basunti overlooks a lake formed from the damming of the Beas River in the north-west corner of India. It lies in the western edge of Kangra Valley in the hill state of Himachal Pradesh. The nearest towns are Pathankot just over the border in the Punjab and Dharamsala, the administrative centre of Himachal Pradesh.
Pathankot, a small provincial city, is served by daily trains from Delhi and other parts of India and is a two hour drive from Basunti. Near Pathankot is another major rail interchange in Chakki Bank which too has a daily overnight trainfrom Delhi. There is also a daily internal air service from Delhi to Dharamshala airport. The transfer to Basunti from Dharamshala airport is about three hours.
Amritsar, the spiritual and cultural centre of the Sikh religion and famous for its Golden Temple, provides the nearest international airport with Air India and Jet Airways flying daily services from London via Delhi. The transfer to Basunti from Amritsar takes approximately three and a half hours by jeep.
